historyofromanovs:

LIST OF ROMANOV RULERS: #11 - Emperor Peter III of Russia (21 February 1728 - 17 July 1762)

“Nature
had made him mean, the smallpox had made him hideous, and his degraded
habits made him loathsome. And Peter had all the sentiments of the worst
kind of small German prince of the time. He had the conviction that his
princeship entitled him to disregard decency and the feelings of
others. He planned brutal practical jokes, in which blows had always a
share. His most manly taste did not rise above the kind of military
interest which has been defined as ‘corporal’s mania,’ the passion for
uniforms, pipeclay, buttons, the ‘tricks of parade and the froth of
discipline.’ He detested the Russians, and surrounded himself with
Holsteiners.” -
1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Many contradictory qualities existed in him: keen observation, zeal and
sharp wit in his arguments and actions, incaution and lack of
perspicuity in conversation, frankness, goodness, sarcasm, a hot temper,
and wrathfulness.
- Russian historian, A.S. Mylnikov

Peter III was almost thirty-four when
he became Russia´s Emperor. His mother, who died a few days after his
birth, was Peter the Great´s daughter Anna, and his father,
Karl-Friedrich, was the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp. Born on February 10,
1728, Peter had spent his childhood in the Baltic backwater of Kiel. The
Duke of Holstein-Gottorp had a passion for drilling troops and a
weakness for alcohol. These devotions consumed most of his waking hours,
and he ignored his son. Peter thus grew up in the care of Holstein´s
household guards officers. Their only interest was the army; they taught
him the manual of arms and parade drill. They put sergeant´s stripes on
his sleeve and let him drill the Holstein household troops. Knowing
nothing else, Peter became passionately enamored of drill field trivia.
In every way, his childhood and early adolescence were undistinguished
by any serious effort at education or training in the arts of governing.

[Even in Russia] Peter´s education … proceeded
without system or direction. His tutors showed him pictures, medals, and
portraits and from them sought to teach him history. To teach him
physics, they told him stories about “physical phenomena”; they
introduced him to mathematics by playing number games. He was devoted to
his regiments of toy soldiers and loved to saw away on his violin,
although his efforts produced more noise than music.

A u g u s t    21   1 7 4 5 – Wedding of Grand Duke Peter and Sophia of Anhalt-Zerbst later Catherine the Great.

Toward
the end of july we returned from Peterhof to the city, where all the
preparations where being made for my wedding ceremony. Finally August 21
was fixed by the Empress as the date for the ceremony. As this day
approached, I grew more deeply melancholic. My heart did not forsee
great happiness, ambition alone sustained me. At the bottom of my soul I
had something, I know not what, that never for a single moment let me
doubt that sooner or later I would succeed in becoming the sovereign
Empress of Russia in my own right. The wedding was celebrated with great
pomp and magnificence.

My dear spouse
paid absolutely no attention to me, but was constantly playing soldier
with his valets, drilling them in his room or changing uniforms twenty
times a day. I yawned and I was bored, having no one to speak to, or
else I appeared in public.

Empress Catherine II
The
two were absolutely incompatible with each other. Still, Catherine
tried to keep up appearances in front of the court and was patient with
her silly and eccentric husband, as long as such pretence served her
ambitious purposes. These two people unfortunately brought together by
circumstances were destined to break up.
